Somewhere Over the Rainbow - 12" x 18" - June 2012 - Watercolour
I went away with my girlfriends last weekend, took an extra day off from work, and stretched our get-away into three days - enabling me to work without interruption, no laundry to wash, fold or hang, household chores to moan and fuss about, kids to tend to and taxi around... just pure bliss, and painting!
When I started this painting, I was kind of in a panic, thinking I had drowned it in way too much colour, but slowly, as I began to add more detail, the colour kind of subdued into a more harmonious balance that I could accept.
Originally, it was only a joke, but the title "somewhere over the rainbow" came about from my mocking the colourful puddles consuming my paper. Most of the time, I come up with some pretty ludicrous and outrageous, often idiotic titles, for my paintings, but I couldn't come up with a darn thing for this one - other than to call it "Karen", of whom the portrait is. But, you know what... I like to think that her gaze, whatever it is that she is fixated on, is something positive, somewhere over the rainbow, so it's sticking

Thanks for looking!
I'd like to paint like you.
