Harry by Face-Reality Harry by Face-Reality
Harry - Watercolour - 12" x 18" - January 2013

Here's Harry! He's my second watercolour of the new year, and I just started my third yesterday! I'm on a roll... or on the ball... or I've just coughed up a fur ball, some might say, as I am on a crazy cat kick these days!!

Harry is my next door neighbour's cat, and he has always terrorized my own cats. He's big, and he's mean, but he is GORGEOUS!! Okay, fine... I just can't help myself - I LOVE CATS!!

Thanks for looking!!

I like cats too! Good color and interesting shapes; like the cross-contour shadow insets between raised fur: cool treatment. :sun:

Wow, the definition and intensity of this in watercolor is amazing. What did you use for the whiskers/white fur on his face?

Wow! I love this one as well, the eyes are totally amazing to me. I am very curious how you do the whiskers, and the highlighting in the upper left?

Thank you! I work around the whiskers, and sometimes right through them,in seeping puddles of colour, to give the shadowy effect off of them.. when everything is complete, I at times will go back into the whiskers and clean them up a bit, by scrubbing out parts. I did not do this though on the upper left for the ear, that was worked once, and I like the effect, and left it as is.

Now that is very interesting to me, if you don't mind me asking how do you scrub them out? I have a slight reliance on Permanent White Gouache and use it if need something opaque or as a highlight, but I am not a fan of it really. I am always happier to stick strictly to transparent watercolours if I can. It's nice when things just work out on their own sometimes.

Yikes - just noticing your comment now... You can scrub things out by wetting your brush with clean water, and just scrubbing the paper with the bristles, and them dabbing with paper towel so that you can clean up the water before it leaks into areas that you do not want affected. Works most of the time for me!

Well then you are going to laugh at me.

The technique you described I have used many times, just without knowing what it was called. However I took you to mean once the washes have dried you can use a blade to scrape off paper and paint that have gone in an area you didn't intend them to. I did manage to do that actually, being very careful of course and recognizing that to paint on those scraped surfaces was a bit different.

I used it a bit here:[link] without any problems, but I will use your suggested system in the future, it's much safer. Thanks for getting back to me. :-)

Beautiful, but mean just doesn't come across in this pic, although knowing cats I wouldn't be surprised. They have mastered the fine art of "who me? - why... butter wouldn't melt in my mouth". LOL Love cats too. I can see why you are on a crazy cat kick with these beautiful subjects. Plus your ability is to definitely be commended.

Thank you! No, I do not use white paint for the whiskers - I did not even use any masking fluid on this one... just the white of the paper, and lots of patience :)

Thank you! Actually, I had started the other one at the end of December, and finished early in the New Year... but I started my third one this weekend - and lo and behold, I think it may be complete before the end of the week! I'm on a roll :) I really do have some other work to tackle, so my fun will be over soon :)
