First Born - 24" x 36" - Acrylic - September 2010

It has been awhile since I last posted, and feels like forever that I've worked on this one... but, in all honesty, I just haven't had the time to devote to it as much as I wanted.

Needless to say - it's finished! This is my daughter, Rebecca, my first born, with the first born kitten from my cat Sepia's litter. I know... pretty lame title! heheh

Thanks for looking!

In honesty, your work gives me such hope for myself. This is absolutely beautiful and I especially enjoy the angle that I assume the picture was taken and you portrayed it well in the painting.

The way you did the eyes amazes me, as well as the hands.

You're an inspiration to me and I thank you for sharing your lovely work.

Oh this is too too precious!
I think it's largely due to the composition. I'm sure you know that the eye moves from bottom left to top right when scanning a picture, you've taken advantage of that here. The brightest of the bright red grabs your attention, that makes you want to focus on the kitten, and sure enough straight Rebecca's smile!

ANd the way you've captured the the difficult foreshortening and it must have been hard to get her smile just right at that angle?

(btw the title is not lame at all, these things come from somewhere within us and they hold some truth to them, (they're so hard to come up with butI think it's a wonderful title, and it has meaning for YOU)

YOu should see some of my titles! "Truffles" (!?)

thanks! Yes, I really liked this one... and I just got lucky with that smile of hers, it was truly genuine. None of us could quite wipe the smiles off of our faces that day, when our little kittens were born.

The art is in the capturing of that genuine pleasure and excitement.

Thanks so much Lynda!! I am elated with this painting. I actually didn't want it to end - I was enjoying it so much while working on it!! I have another pose from the same sitting that I will be painting next... but I have to also squeeze in a birthday present painting for my mother-in-law. Fun fun fun!! :)

Lame title or not, the thumbnail looks like a photo and the full view looks like a digital painting. Worth the wait.

Oh, so cute.
And again, well done on the painting, bit to much red for me, but nice work.

Thanks. Yes, it is a bit bright, wouldn't you say, but for some reason, I have a tendency to go for the more vibrant colours. This image is actually from a photo that I took when the kittens were first born, in my daughter's room, who has bright orange walls! I liked the effect of the orange/red being reflected in the shadows of her hands and in her clothing as well. :)

No, no heat lamps, just the light coming thru the window, into my daughter's already brightly coloured room. :)

Thanks! I am so pleased to read this comment, as this is exactly what I am striving for! There was once upon a time that I would not have settled for seeing the brush strokes, trying to get as smooth and clean as I possibly could, but now I have come to realize that I really do like to see the work, and how the paint is applied. Anyway, no worries... more to come!! I actually have another pose from this same day, that I would like to paint as well. I loved painting my daughter's shirt! :)

Aw, thanks :) Actually, since I only got back into my painting roughly 2 years ago, I've just been mostly trying to get the feel for it again. It had been 15 long years that I didn't do too much, so it's fun just experimenting for now. I will eventually aim to paint for profit soon :)
